Amy met George’s father Matthew at Purdue Uni when she was a freshman in 1994. In 1998, they fell in love and moved to Greece, the homeland of Matt. They tied the knot in 2000 and were blessed with four children, with George being their first.

George inherited the athletic traits of his parents, who were both very athletic and passionate about sports. Now his mom Amy is often seen cheering for her son, George, and his team in his games.

Amy Karlaftis showed immense strength and courage in raising her children alone after her husband, Matthew Karlaftis, passed away from a heart attack at age 44. Despite the tragedy, the Karlaftis family has continued to honor Matthew’s memory, with their son George carrying on his father’s athletic legacy.

After Matthew Karlaftis’ passing, the family left Greece and returned to Amy’s home country, the United States, together. Despite the challenges they faced, their strong bond helped them overcome the difficult circumstances.

According to Amy, after her husband or George’s dad passed, George played a very crucial role in raising his elder siblings as she told in an interview,

“I think George took the majority of the pain on his shoulders, whether that’s what he should have done or not. When you lose your father, Greek custom is you become the man of the house.”

She added,

“Well, at 13, we all know, it’s not very possible to become the man of the house, but he took that true to heart and tried to do his best to be there for me, be there for his siblings, which he still does to this day. He had to grow up way too fast and become mature like overnight.”

Sources claim that Amy was a working-class woman and has always been always there for her child in her success. She was the one who supported her son, George after finding out about her son’s athletic interest at a very young age.

Despite all her hardships, she never made her children feel a lack of love and opportunities to continue playing football.
